Alamosa resident Erold C. Atencio, 64, died December 7, 2022, at his home in Alamosa, surrounded by his loving family.
Erold was born in Alamosa, Colorado on November 15, 1958, to Jose Francisco Atencio and Maria Ruby Garcia Atencio. He married Joyce Cisneros in Conejos, Colorado on November 12, 1983.
Erold was a natural-born leader. He worked for more than 40 years for Expo Potato Company in the Carmel area and was well-known in the agriculture community. In his younger years he worked for the Town of Antonito, the Cumbres & Toltec railroad, and was a Wildland Firefighter. Erold was an excellent welder and fabricator.
Erold enjoyed car shows and riding motorcycles. In his early years, he was an amateur boxer in Antonito. He had a great sense of humor, and it was always there, even up to the very end. He also enjoyed hunting.
He is survived by his wife Joyce Atencio of Alamosa; his son Caylum (Michele Mascarenas) Atencio of Alamosa; his grandchildren Christopher, Johnathan, and Kaylee Atencio; his siblings Eloy Atencio of San Antonio, CO, Elaine (Felipe) Blea of Antonito, CO, Elizabeth (Dale) Cisneros of Alamosa and Andrew (Ernestine) Atencio of Alamosa; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, and extended family and friends.
Erold is preceded in death by his parents, his son Cory Atencio, his eldest brother Erold Atencio, and his parents-in-law Gilbert and Eufelia Cisneros.
Cremation was chosen and a Recitation of the Rosary will be held 9:30 a.m. followed by a Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Friday, December 16, 2022, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa. Interment will follow services in the La Jara Cemetery.
