DEL NORTE – The sixth-ranked Del Norte High School volleyball team played its final home match of the regular season on Tuesday as it hosted Hoehne, traditionally one of the best teams in the state.
The visiting Lady Farmers gave the Lady Tigers all they could handle in the first two sets. Del Norte won the first set 25-22, while Hoehne took the second 25-21.
But the Lady Tigers finally wore out the Lady Farmers as Del Norte won the final two sets by identical 25-14 scores.
“Hoehne is a fantastic team and they’re coached very well,” said Del Norte coach Chance Canty. “We kept the pressure on them from the get go and that was our goal. To be the aggressor from point one and never back down. They came out ready to go and kept them on their heels.”
Hoehne took a 3-2 lead to open the first sets, but Del Norte went on a 7-2 run to go in front at 9-5. The Lady Farmers then had a 7-2 run of its own to regain the lead at 12-11, and they eventually built the lead to 15-13.
The Lady Tigers tied the score at 15-15, but the Lady Farmers had a 4-1 rubn for a 19-16 edge.
Del Norte then scored the next seven unanswered points to regain the lead at 23-19. Hoehne came back to close within 24-22, but the Lady Tigers scored the final point for a 25-22 win.
Del Norte began the second set with a 5-2 lead, however, Hoehne went on a 5-1 run to go in front at 7-6. The Lady Tigers scored six points in a row to lead 12-7.
Del Norte had a 14-8 lead but Hoehne score three consecutive points to pull within 14-11. After a Lady Tigers side out, the Lady Farmers closed the deficit to 15-13.
Hoehne then had a 7-2 rally to regain the lead at 20-17. Del Norte narrowed the margin to 22-21, but the Lady Farmers scored the final two points for a 25-21 win.
The Lady Tigers started the third set with a 4-2 edge, but the Lady Farmers scored three in a row for a 5-4 lead. Del Norte then scored four straight points for an 8-5 lead.
The Lady Tigers had an 11-8 lead before they scored six consecutive points to increase their advantage to 17-8. The lead grew to 19-9 before the Lady Farmers scored three straight points to reduce the gap to 19-12.
Del Norte finished the set with a 6-2 run for a 25-14 win.
The Lady Tigers scored the first two points of the fourth set, but the Lady Farmers scored four in a row. Del Norte regained the lead at 6-5, but Hoehne took the lead back at 8-7.
The Lady Tigers had a 6-2 run for a 13-10 lead. After a brief Lady Farmers side out, Del Norte scored three unanswered points to stretch the lead to 16-11.
Hoehne closed to within 16-13, but Del Norte closed out the set with a 9-1 run for a 25-14 victory.
Kailee Gallegos led the Lady Tigers offense with 44 assists. Hadley Leggett led the hitting game with 17 kills, followed by Reese Brown with 10, Brynley Brown and Baylie Laymon both with nine, and Autumn Gallegos with six.
Laymon led in service aces with four, and Emma Parra, Reese Brown, and Kailee Gallegos each had one.
Del Norte (19-1, 6-0) concluded the regular season with a trip to McClave on Thursday. The Lady Tigers will host a Class 2A regional tournament next weekend.
“Our regular season is over on Thursday,” Canty said. “Then we’ll get ready for regionals.”
