Daniel Lee Viergutz passed away after a long illness on April 15, 2025.
Dan was born on Feb. 1, 1951, in Norfolk, Neb., to Vernon and Frances Viergutz.
He was raised in Randolph, Neb., where he graduated in 1969. The fall of 69 he joined the US Army where he served honorably till late 71. During that time, he was stationed in Vietnam where he received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Commendation Medal for sustained acts of heroism.
Shortly after his discharge he relocated to Alamosa, Colo. He purchased the Purple Pig Pub in 1972 and enjoyed a decade as the owner. During his time at The Pig, he was active in the community sponsoring several softball teams and supporting live music. He also sponsored the Baca Grande charity golf tournament for a few years.
In 1982, he married Deborah Wingate. They lived in Alamosa for many years and moved around the country seeking new adventures. They later separated.
Dan moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 2012 where he loved being able to golf year-round.
Dan was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous celebrating 34 years of sobriety. It is Dan’s legacy that he was instrumental in working with and giving back to fellow veterans and others through his involvement in AA. Dan will be remembered for his quick wit, love of road trips and always being available to lend a hand when needed.
Dan is survived by his good friend and companion Maureen Larkin Gioia, Deborah Viergutz, daughter Danielle Wingate Embree (Sean). Grandchildren, Lisa Eller, Daniel Wingate, Logan Shay, Scotty Shay, Tea Embree, Dylan Wingate, Sean Embree and four great-grandchildren. Also, siblings Susan Kollars (Dennis), Patricia Verzani (Fred), Mark Viergutz (Cheryl).
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, son Dustin Wingate, and nieces Sandi Kollars Michel, and Lisa Verzani.
Cremation has taken place and a burial with honors will be held at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, N.M., on June 10 at 10:30 a.m.
