MOSCA – The Sangre de Cristo High School football team played at home for the final time this season as the Thunderbirds hosted Crowley County Saturday at Sangre’s field.
However, the Chargers proved to be too much for the Thunderbirds as Sangre lost by a score of 50-6.
Sangre had the ball first and it had a promising drive going. The T-birds drove all the way to the Crowley County 22, however, they turned the ball over on downs.
The Chargers scored the first time they had the ball and they marched all the way to a touchdown. Derreck Buford capped off the drive with a 2-yard run, and Seth Schulz ran in for the two-point conversion and Crowley County led 8-0.
The T-birds fumbled the ball away on their next possession, and the Chargers made them pay. Buford scored his second touchdown, this time on a 15-yard reverse. Schulz again recorded the two-point conversion and Crowley County led 16-0 at the end of the first quarter.
After Sangre turned the ball over on downs again, Crowley County got another touchdown. This time Buford tossed a halfback pass to Schulz who ran 53 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed and the Chargers had a 22-0 lead.
Sangre finally got on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter as Kolby Shallabarger pitched to Carlos Cerrato who went 22 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, but Crowley County led 22-6.
The T-birds then recovered an onside kick and then drove to the Crowley County 28. But once again, Sangre turned the ball over on downs.
Buford got to the end zone for the third time on the very next play on a 73-yard reverse. The two-point try was no good and the Chargers led 28-6.
An interception by Malaki McNeil set up Crowley County’s next touchdown. Buford found the end zone for the fourth time, this time on a 51-yard scoring strike from Schulz. Aiden Vowels ran in the two-point conversion and Crowley County led 36-6 at halftime.
Sangre recovered another onside kick to open the second half. The T-birds drove to the Crowley County 32, but again turned the ball over on downs.
Buford scored for the fifth time on Crowley County’s next possession. This time he received a 35-yard touchdown pass from Schulz. Schulz also ran in the two-point try and the Chargers led 44-6.
Crowley County got one more touchdown before the end of the third quarter with Buford scoring his sixth touchdown as he caught a 13-yard pass from Schulz. The two-point attempt was no good.
The fourth quarter was played under a running clock and there was no scoring.
Sangre de Cristo had 244 yards of total offense with 220 coming in the running game. Mason Getz led the ground game with 85 yards on 13 carries, followed by Cerrato with 55 yards on 11 carries, Shellaberger with 45 yards on 26 carries, and Joe Brown with 35 yards on seven carries.
Shellabarger completed three of seven passes for 22 yards. Cerrato had one reception for 16 yards, Braiden Cantu had one catch for five yards, and Anthony Trujillo had one reception for one yard.
Crowley County had 389 total yards – 184 rushing and 205 passing.
Buford led the running game with 106 yards on six carries. He also had five receptions for 130 yards and one pass completion for 53 yards.
Schulz completed six of 10 passes for 152 yards.
Sangre de Cristo (1-6, 0-4) will close out the season on Friday as it will travel to Westcliffe to face winless Custer County. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
