MONTE VISTA – It was a tale of two halves when the Monte Vista High School girls basketball team hosted second-ranked Centauri Saturday at the MVHS gym.
The first half was close with the Lady Pirates maintaining a small lead. But the Lady Falcons pulled away in the second half and went on to a 52-31 win.
Rylie McCarroll made one of two from the free throw line for the first point of the game, but Hannah Henderhan did the same for the Lady Pirates. Allessah Archuleta then made a 3-point basket for a 4-1 lead.
Rylie McCarroll drove for a layup, but Daylin Castro made two free throws, and Archuleta made another three to increase the Monte Vista lead to 9-3.
Braelyn Tucker split at the line to reduce the Lady Pirates’ lead to 9-4 at the end of the first quarter.
Destiny Pacheco opened the second quarter with a layup, but Jocelyn Jarvies made a layup and a free throw. Heysenny Beltran made a layup, and after Hannah Curtis made one of two free throws, Hannah Henderhan scored two baskets, and Beltran split at the line to give the Lady Pirates their largest lead at 18-8.
Joselyn McCarroll ended the run, and Jarvies and Hannah Curtis both scored to cut the deficit to 18-14. Archuleta knocked down a jumper, but Kynlei Curtis and Joselyn McCarroll brought the Lady Pirates within 20-18. The McCarrolls both split at the line to tie the score at 20-20.
Beltran scored just before time expired and Monte Vista led 22-20 at halftime.
Rylie McCarroll tied the score to open the second half, and Hannah Curtis made two free throws to give the Lady Falcons their first lead since early in the game. Joselyn McCarroll hit a jumper for a 26-22 Centauri lead.
Beltran scored the Lady Pirates’ first points of the half, but Hannah Curtis scored five points and Joselyn McCarroll two as Centauri increased its lead to 33-24.
Archuleta split at the line, but Hannah Curtis scored four more points and Rylie McCarroll two and the Lady Falcons led 38-25 at the end of the third quarter.
Sasha DuPont and Castro scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter, but Jarvies scored twice, Joselyn McCarroll three points and Hannah Curtis and Rylie McCarroll two as Centauri took its largest lead at 52-29.
Hannah Henderhan scored the final points of the game.
Centauri had three players score in double figures. Hannah Curtis led the way with 14 points, followed by Joselyn McCarroll with 12, and Rylie McCarroll with 11.
Archuleta was Monte Vista’s top scorer with nine points.
Centauri (12-2, 4-0) hosted Alamosa on Tuesday. It will travel to Pagosa Springs on Saturday.
Monte Vista (6-5, 1-2) played at Sargent on Tuesday. It will travel to Montezuma-Cortez on Friday and host Ignacio on Saturday.
