CONEJOS COUNTY — Each year, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) honor officers from around the state for their efforts related to enforcing laws that prohibit impaired driving, preserving occupant protection, and protecting victim services.

Awards are given for individual and team efforts in rural areas and the front range. Many nominations from different agencies around the state are submitted for officers’ efforts.

This year, Deputy Monica Domiguez with the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office was recognized for her efforts in the area of impaired driving. Deputy Dominguez was granted the rural area Outstanding Individual Dedication to Impaired Driving Enforcement award.

In Conejos County in 2024, there were a total of 41 arrests of people who were suspected to be under the influence. These arrests not only include those impaired by alcohol but also drugs.

When looking at the number of law enforcement officers who patrol Conejos County, including the Colorado State Patrol, the number is well over 30 officers. Deputy Dominguez was responsible for more than 20 percent of those arrests.

Impaired driving is preventable because it is a choice. In 2024 across Colorado, 214 people lost their lives in accidents caused by impaired driving. Sadly, one of those fatalities occurred in Conejos County.

Deputy Dominguez’s efforts in enforcing laws prohibiting impaired driving have saved and will continue to save countless lives within the county.
