Carol Jean Shaffer, of Alamosa, Colorado, passed away surrounded by family on April 30, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on January 16, 1943, in Garrett, Indiana, Carol was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and cherished friend to many.
She married the love of her life, Gaylord “Doc” Shaffer, on July 8, 1961. Their marriage, built on enduring love and unwavering commitment, spanned over 63 years. In 1976, Carol and Doc moved to Alamosa, Colorado, where they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love.
Carol had a heart as wide as the world. Her love for family defined her life, and her home was always open—not only to her own children but also to extended family and numerous foster children who found comfort and care under her roof. She offered not just shelter, but deep compassion and unconditional support to all who entered her life.
She also had a lifelong love for animals and was rarely without a beloved pet by her side. Her gentle, nurturing spirit extended to all creatures, and she treated every animal with the same kindness she gave to people.
Carol was also deeply creative and took great joy in knitting and crocheting. Her hands were rarely still, and she poured love into every handmade blanket, scarf, and gift she crafted. Her work wrapped countless loved ones in warmth, comfort, and memory.
Carol is survived by her husband, Gaylord “Doc” Shaffer; her children, Lisa (Wade) George, Bernie Black, Rosa (Dale) Gaither, Robin (Jace) Booth, Nikki (Brian) Gunther, Lewis (Christina) Shaffer, and Justin Shaffer; 25 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many extended family members, former foster children, and dear friends who will forever hold her in their hearts.
