ALAMOSA — At 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8, the FBI notified the Alamosa Police Department (APD) regarding a social media post that contained a threat to detonate an explosive device at the San Luis Valley Regional Airport. The FBI also provided information pertaining to a potential suspect.
APD immediately responded to the airport where officers evacuated the premises and apprehended the suspect in the lobby. The suspect was identified as 18-year-old David Mejia of Denver.
Mejia was found in the airport's public lobby and had not entered the secured area. A thorough search was immediately conducted, ultimately yielding no explosive or suspicious devices.
“We do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public,” said APD Chief George Dingfelder in a press release issued by the city.
Mejia was subsequently charged with making a False Report of Explosives, Endangering Public Transportation and Terroristic Threats/Menacing and booked into the Alamosa County Jail. All three charges are felonies.
The incident was quickly resolved through the collaborative efforts of the Alamosa Police Department and the Colorado Springs FBI Office, Dingfelder added. This is an ongoing investigation, and no further information will be released.
