Blankets for dogs needed

SAN LUIS VALLEY — The Valley Humane League is collecting blankets for dogs who are left outside in these freezing winter conditions.

“We will distribute blankets around the Valley. If you know of dogs left outside, particularly those tied up please text the League at 719-580-4014 with the address and we will see to it that the animal receives blankets. If you see an animal being abused or neglected please let us know. Even though it is unfortunately not illegal to chain a dog, it is cruel,” organizers stated. “Owners of dogs should be aware that most dogs left out are miserable and often freeze to death just as their owners would if left in these conditions.”

VHL asks pet owners to bring their animals inside in adverse conditions. Blankets help but often aren’t enough to keep an animal from freezing. Colorado State law CRS 18-9-202 states that: Animal cruelty is a class 1 misdemeanor in Colorado and punishment includes up to 18 months in prison, and or a fine of $100 to $5,000.

People can bring blankets to the Green Spot Garden Center on State Street in Alamosa or text the number above and they will pick up.

Report animal abuse or neglect to police or text the Valley Humane League at 719-580-4014.  The Valley Humane League wants to help, you will remain anonymous.
