Longtime Alamosa resident Betty Ruby Cockrum, 85, died after a sudden illness, April 17, 2023, at her home in Alamosa surrounded by her loving family and close friend, Father Andrés.
Betty’s life began in Alamosa, Colo., on Sept. 30, 1937, the daughter of John R. Romero and Cirila Montoya Romero.
Betty worked for many years as a Salesclerk for Gobin’s Office Supply. She was a devoted and active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa. She volunteered in many different positions throughout the years including leading rosaries for funerals, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and was a member of the Legion of Mary, as well as others.
Betty also was a devoted care giver to her sister Isabel, who resides at SLV Center, who may not recognize her as her sister, but there has never been a day she hasn't recognized the love.
In her younger years, Betty enjoyed bowling and puzzle making, as well as hiking and camping with close friends. Her favorite past-time was spending time visiting with her family and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandson.
Betty is survived by her children Kay (Dan) Noble of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Karen (Robert Postovit) Valdez of Brighton, Colo.; her grandchildren Dr. Corey (Shannon) Valdez of Traverse City, Mich., and Jennifer Valdez of Denver, Colo.; her great-grandson Clifton Valdez; her siblings Isabel Lucero of Alamosa, Colo., and Paul (Juanita) Romero of Widefield, Colo.; as well as eight nieces and nephews, and a host of extended family and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents John and Cirila, and her husband Jim.
Cremation was chosen and a Recitation of the Rosary will be held 9:30 a.m., followed by a Memorial Mass 10 a.m. Thursday, May 4, 2023, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa. Interment of ashes will follow services in the Alamosa Cemetery. Contributions in her memory are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 726 3rd St., Alamosa, CO 81101.
