ALAMOSA — Alamosa City Council will be addressing a myriad of topics during Wednesday night’s meeting, ranging from a proclamation recognizing a local centenarian to taking up a resolution on the last budget amendment of 2024.
First up on the agenda is recognition of Hazel Petty, an Alamosa resident who recently turned 100 years old.
Under the Consent Calendar, where issues can be voted on with one collective vote, council will approve a resolution on first reading that expands the methods by which a security guard can demonstrate firearms proficiency and a clean background check beyond the current requirement of possessing a valid concealed carry permit. A public hearing on the resolution is scheduled for April 2.
Three outside agencies that play significant roles in the community will be presenting to council members, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley, Habitat for Humanity and the LEAD/Co-responder program that operates under the supervision of the Alamosa Police Department.
There will also be a quarterly update on Housing and Downtown Plans.
Council members will also consider a proposed budget amendment. As the document attached to the agenda shows, the amount of sales tax that was collected by the city was not as great as had been projected, although the difference was not significant. There was also funding “moved around” to accommodate needed capital improvement projects. And, given that this is the last budget amendment to close out 2024, the document shows that any large, unattended grant items have been accounted for.
The final item for the meeting before “Committee Reports” by council members is related to council’s voting on whether or not to purchase a new piece of art from the 2024 Arts Festival or save the $6,000 allocated for a purchase for next year. There are several pieces that were “People’s Choice” winners last year but there are other sculptures that could be considered for purchase, as well.
Anyone interested in seeing a collection of the artwork to be discussed or any other item on the agenda can do so by going to the Alamosa City Council website, clicking on Meeting Agendas and then selecting March 19, 2025.
