ALAMOSA – The 2024 Erik Melgoza Shootout opened on Thursday at the AHS gym with the Alamosa High School girls basketball team coming back to defeat Del Norte 34-30.

“it was a pretty tough game,” said AHS coach Ty Crowther. “We kind of had those first game jitters, but we came through as a team.  A bunch of the younger ones stepped up into that leadership role. I got a great bunch of girls and they didn’t get down on themselves too much. We got a little frustrated but we got through it and came back and got the W which was the main thing we needed to do.”

The teams opened the game by trading points before Brynly Brown hit a 3-point basket for a 7-4 Lady Tigers lead. She later split at the line. Emma Parra ended the first quarter with a pair of free throws and Del Norte led 10-6.

Brynly Brown made two more baskets for a 14-8 advantage. Emmalie Quintana made a layup, and Aubrey Rothermich drained a 3-point basket to cut the deficit to 14-13.

Parra made two out of four free throws for a 16-13 Del Norte lead at halftime.

Audrina Knorr made a layup and later made one of two from the line to tie the score at 16-16.Kaitlyn Velasquez made one of two free tosses, but Rothermich made a jumper for Alamosa’s first lead of the game.

Kadie Hawkins made back-to-back baskets for a 31-23 lead. Rothermich then hit another jumper for a double-digit lead at 34-24.

Del Norte attempted a comeback, but it fell four points short.

Rothermich led all scorers with 16 points. Hawkins was next for the Lady Mean Moose with six.

Parra led the Lady Tigers with 12 points and she went 12-16 from the line. Brynly Brown was next with eight.
