Alamosa girls run to 63-35 win over Cortez

ALAMOSA – After opening the Intermountain League scheduled with a 55-17 win over Bayfield, the Alamosa High School girls basketball team was looking to improve to 2-0 when it hosted Montezuma-Cortez Saturday at the AHS gym.

The Lady Mean Moose were successful as they defeated the Lady Panthers 63-35.

Jaelin Garcia got Alamosa off to a good start as she made a layup and a free throw. Aubrey Rothermich then hit a 3-point basket for a 6-0 lead.

Kayden Lee put Cortez on the board, but Garcia and Alexia Montoya both scored to increase the lead to 10-2. Kadie Hawkins split at the line, and Vanessa Villalva recorded a three and a layup and the Lady Mean Moose led 16-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Shaylynn Bia scored the first points of the second quarter. Hawkins again split at the line, and Keeley Clark made back-to-back threes to reduce the Alamosa lead to 17-10.

Morgan Ortega and Arreli Felix both scored. Rothermich made a jumper and a trey, and Ortega also drained a 3-pointer. Hawkins made two free throws, but Taylor Whited made a jumper.

Alamosa led 31-12 at the intermission.

Rothernmich began the second-half scoring, but Kyndall Schmidt and Whited both made threes. Ortega answered with a trey and Felix made two free throws for a 38-18 advantage.

Bia made a 3-pointer and Reyaunna Jones split at the line. Ortega made a layup and another three, but Schmitt made one of two free throws and the Lady Mean Moose led 43-23 at the end of the third quarter.

Rothermich scored the first points of the fourth quarter and Ortega made one of two from the line. Schmitt made a three, but Montoya also recorded a trey. Schmitt made another 3-pointer and Siana Elliott split at the line.

Alamosa then went on a 14-0 run with Rothermich and Garcia both scoring four points, and Hawkins, Ortega and Audrina Knorr each scoring two.

Clarke closed out the scoring with a three and a layup.

Ortega and Rothermich both scored 16 points to lead the Lady Mean Moose.

Schmitt was the Lady Panthers’ top scorer with 10 points.

Alamosa (8-3, 2-0) will travel to Pagosa Springs on Friday for a 5:30 tip-off. It will play at Pueblo Centennial on Saturday with game time slated for 2:30 p.m.
