Alamosa girls come up short twice over the weekend

ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School girls basketball team had a rough time this past weekend as it lost a pair of home games.

On Friday, the Lady Mean Moose lost to Montrose 54-33, and on Saturday, they lost a close game with Delta 45-43.

Montrose 54, Alamosa 33

Lilly Nelson scored the first points of the game to give the Lady Redhawks an early 2-0 lead. Morgan Ortega then drained a 3-point basket for a 3-2 edge.

That would be the only time that Alamosa woukd have the lead. Mayce Oberg game the lead back to Montrose and she later split at the free throw line. London Schafer hit a jumper, Maggie Legg made two threes, and Oberg made two more free throws for a 15-3 advantage.

Ortega knocked down a jumper in the final seconds of the first quarter to cut the deficit to 15-5.

Audrina Knorr opened the second quarter with a trey, and Jaelin Garcia made two free thorws to cut the Montrose lead to 15-10. But Legg and Nelson both made baskets for a 19-10 lead.

Legg made a layup and Oberg made two of her own for a 25-10 advantage.

Garcia scored to end the Montrose run, but Legg hit a jumper. Aubrey Rothermich hit a jumper, but Schafer made a 3-pointer to give the Lady Redhawks a 30-14 lead at halftime.

Ortega began the third quarter by making one of two free throws, and Garcia followed with a jumper. But Nelson made two free throws, Oberg made a jumper, and Brooke Williams split at the line to push the Lady Redhawks’ lead to 35-17. Rothermich hit a jumper, and Garcia made two baskets to cut the deficit to 35-23. But Kendall Johnson made two from the line.

Knorr split at the line, and Kadie Hawkins scored in the paint to cut the Montrose lead to 37-26 at the end of the third.

The Lady Redhawks scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 46-26.

Arreli Felix ended the run with a layup and a free throw. But Montrose scored the next seven points.

Knorr and Ortega both scored layups. Wareham concluded the scoring with a free throw.

Garcia led Alamosa in scoring with 10 points, followed by Ortega with eight.

Legg and Oberg both scored 16 points to lead all scorers.

Delta 45, Alamosa 43

Rothermich gave Alamosa the early lead with a jumper. But Taylor Somers tied the score, and Mya Abeyta, Breezy Huff and Jazlin Naranjo all scored to give the Lady Panthers a 13-5 lead.

Felix made one of two free throws to cut the Delta lead to 13-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Ava Martinez opened the second quarter with a layup, followed by a three by Rothermich and layups by Knorr and Ortega to tie the score at 15-15. Huff split at the line to end the run, but Felix drove for a layup to give Alamosa a 17-16 lead.

Paige Kehmeier tied the score with a free throw, but Rothermich drained a 3-pointer. Somers scored just before time expired to give the Lady Mean Moose a 20-19 lead at halftime.

Rothermich knocked down a jumper to begin the third quarter, but Somers made one of two from the line. Huff and Naranjo both scored to put Delta back in front at 24-22.

Ortega’s layup tied the score, and Knorr made one of two free throws. Huff did the same for Delta, but Knorr scored a layup to put the Lady Mean Moose back into the lead at 27-25.

Somers split at the line twice to tie the score again. But Rothermich scored in the paint for a 29-27 Alamosa lead.

Abeyta tied the score again, but Garcia made a layup and Rothermich made two free throws for a 33-29 lead.

Huff made two free throws, but Ortega answered with a 3-point basket. Somers closed out the quarter to cut the Alamosa lead to 36-33.

Huff made two baskets to give the lead back to Delta at 37-36. Ortega made one of two from the line to deadlock the score, but Somers scored a layup for a 39-37 Delta lead.

Garcia then scored a layup and added a free throw for a 40-39 lead.

That would be the last time the Lady Mean Moose would have the lead. Kehmeier hit a jumper, and Huff made two free throws for a 43-40 lead.

Garcia split at the line, but so did Somers and Kehmeier.

Knorr made two free throws to cut the deficit to 45-43, but that’s as close at Alamosa would come.

Rothermich scored 14 points and Ortega 11 to lead the Lady Mean Moose.

Huff was the Lady Panthers’ top scorer with 14 points, followed by Somers with 12.

Alamosa (6-3) will open Intermountain League play at Bayfield on Friday. It will then host Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday.
