ALAMOSA – The First Annual Erik Melgoza Shootout saw two contrasting games in the boys contests Friday at the Alamosa High School gym.
The first game saw Lamar come from behind to defeat Del Norte 34-33, and the second saw Alamosa crush Ellicott 76-19.
Alamosa 76, Ellicott 19
The Mean Moose got off to a fast start as they scored the first 16 points of the game. Brant Jackson scored six of the points.
Ellicott got on the board on a jumper by Parris Erickson, but Alamosa scored the final six points of the quarter for a 22-2 lead at the end of the first.
The Thunderhawks closed to within 26-7, but the Mean Moose scored eight straight points and led 36-10 at halftime.
Parker Gilmore, Victor Zepeda and Zack Crowther all hit 3-point baskets to begin the third quarter and they eventually led 58-10. Ellicott scored the final four points of the quarter.
The fourth quarter was played under a running clock with Alamosa outscoring Ellicott 18-5.
Jackson led all scorers with 25 points, followed by Gilmore with 12 and Zepeda with 10.
Tavon Flewellen led Ellicott with seven points.
Lamar 34, Del Norte 33
Gabrian Jacobs gave the Thunder the early lead by splitting a pair of free throws. LaShawn Trujillo gave the Tigers the lead with back-to-back layups.
Jacobs scored a layup, but Del Norte got five straight points. Lamar got a layup to close the margin to 9-5 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was a low-scoring affair with both teams tallying on six points apiece as the Tigers led 15-11.
Lamar came back to tie the score at 17-17 midway through the third quarter, but Kelby Mondragon hit a three for Del Norte. Tytus Atencio scored the Tigers’ final two points of the quarter for a 25-20 lead.
Lamar rallied to reduce the deficit to 27-26, but Del Norte scored six straight points to take its largest lead at 33-26.
Lamar scored the final eight points with Jacob Dunning putting Lamar into the lead with two free throws with 32 second remaining.
Del Norte attempted a shot just before time expired, but it was blocked.
Atencio led Del Norte in scoring with 13 points, followed by Mondragon wit5h 12.
Dunning was Lamar’s top scorer with eight points, followed by Jacobs with seven.
Today’s schedule
The tournament concludes today with Del Norte (0-1) facing Ellicott (0-1) at 11:30 a.m., and Alamosa (1-0) will play Lamar (1-0) at 2:30 p.m.
