Affected Area:  the San Luis Valley of south-central Colorado, including Alamosa, Costilla and Conejos counties. San Luis Valley cities potentially affected include, but are not limited to: Alamosa and La Jara. 

Advisory in Effect:  1:00 PM MST to 8:00 PM MST, Wednesday, March 7, 2018. 

Public Health Recommendations:  If significant wildfire smoke is present and reducing visibility to less than 10 miles across a wide area, People with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children in the affected area should reduce prolonged or heavy indoor and outdoor exertion. 

Outlook:  Smoke and haze are likely across southern Alamosa County, and northern Conejos County Colorado due to a controlled burn in the Alamosa Wildlife Refuge northeast of the town of Alamosa. Smoke is likely to be most apparent during the afternoon hours, then dissipate during the evening as atmospheric mixing increases.

Residents are recommended to limit outdoor physical activity until smoke disperses. Residents unusually sensitive to smoke should consider reducing prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion from noon until midnight on Thursday. Anyone with specific health effects should seek medical care.
