The Colorado High School Activities Association released its All-State baseball teams last week with 11 student-athletes from the San Luis Valley being recognized. All 11 are honorable mention selections in their respective classifications.

11 SLV baseball players named All-State by CHSAA

ALAMOSA – The Colorado High School Activities Association released its All-State baseball teams last week with 11 student-athletes from the San Luis Valley being recognized.

All 11 are honorable mention selections in their respective classifications.

Six of the locals are from Class 2A schools with half of them from Monte Vista. The All-State Pirates included sophomore Azariah Hurtado, sophomore Kobe Jiron, and junior Kaden Mellott

Mellott was Monte Vista’s top hitter with a .387 batting average. He also had six doubles, two triples and 15 RBIs. He was also the Pirates’ top pitcher with an 8-2 record and a 2.01 earned run average. He also struck out 101 and walked only 16. He had 11 stolen bases.

Hurtado batted .329 with nine doubles, three triples, two home runs and 31 RBIs. As a pitcher, he went 1-0 with a 4.00 ERA with 10 strikeouts and seven walks. He stole 20 bases.

Jiron batted .262 with five doubles, three triples and 13 RBIs. He was also the second pitcher in the rotation and he went 5-3 with a 2.01 ERA and he struck out 55 and walked 32. He also stole 23 bases.

Monte Vista went 19-5 overall and it won the Southern Peaks League championship with an 11-0 record and it advanced to the state tournament.

Del Norte had two selections in seniors Nicolas Atencio and Gage Trujillo.

Atencio batted .532 with nine doubles, one triple and 20 RBIs. As a pitcher he had a 2-4 record with a 1.52 ERA, 87 strikeouts and 19 walks. He also stole 18 bases.

Trujillo had a .352 batting average with four doubles, one triple and 13 RBIs. Pitching-wise, he had an 0-1 record with a 5.73 ERA, nine strikeouts and six walks. He had 17 stolen bases.

The Tigers were 11-10 overall and 10-4 in league play.

The final local Class 2A All-State player is Sanford senior Cash Caldon. He batted .553 with five doubles, two triples and 25 RBIs. As a pitcher, he was 2-3 with an 11.09 ERA, 23 strikeouts and 29 walks. He also stole 19 bases.

The Mustangs went 12-8 overall and 6-5 in league play.

The remaining five locals are from Class 1A schools with three of them coming from Sierra Grande. The list includes junior Kobe Mizokami, sophomore Rolando Najera and senior Brian Ontiveros.

Mizokami batted .520 with two doubles, a home run and 15 RBIs. Pitching-wise, he had a 3-0 record with a 7.11 ERA, 25 strikeouts and 14 walks. He also stole 37 bases.

Najera had a .690 batting average with five doubles, two triples, one home run and 22 RBIs. He also stole 31 bases.

Ontiveros batted .686 with five doubles, four triples and 17 RBIs. As a pitcher, he had a 6-1 record with a 7.78 ERA, 51 strikeouts and 15 walks. He stole 35 bases.

The Panthers had a 13-3 overall record and they were 4-0 in league play.

Centennial had one selection in senior Manny Benton. He had a .600 batting average. He also stole 16 bases.

The Rams were 2-10 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Rounding out the local All-State players is Antonito senior Darius Cisneros-Gomez. He had a .485 average with two doubles, a triple and one home run. He stole 24 bases.

The Trojans had an overall record of 7-9-1 and they were 2-2 in league.
