The seventh-ranked Monte Vista High School baseball team won the Class 2A Region 7 Tournament Saturday at Adrian M. Gutierrez Field. The Pirates first held off a late Ellicott charge for a 5-4 win, and they then defeated Dawson School 2-1 in nine innings. With the tournament win, Monte Vista qualifies for this week’s Class 2A State Tournament at the Runyon Sports Complex in Pueblo.

The Alamosa High School girls golf team is in 11th place after the first day of the Class 3A State Tournament Monday at the Olde Course in Loveland.

The second day of the Colorado High School Activities Association’s state track meets took place Friday at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.

The 2024 Colorado High School Activities Association state track meet began Thursday at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.

The Colorado High School Activities Association released the regional baseball brackets for Classes 5A, 4A, 3A and 2A on Wednesday with three local schools continuing their seasons. All three teams are Class 2A schools.

The Larry Holder Golf Tournament will take place on June 29 at the Monte Vista Golf Course. This year, the tournament features golf with a twist on the Front 9 and with a glowball on the Back 9.

Four high school girls golfers qualified for the Class 3A State Tournament on Tuesday as both Alamosa and Monte Vista competed at the Region 4 Tournament at Cattails Golf Course.

The Colorado High School Activities Association released the list of qualifiers for the 2024 State Track and Field Meet on Monday. The state meet takes place this weekend at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood. Several athletes from the San Luis Valley will participate in this year’s meet. The list is as follows:

During its April meeting at the DCSD Legacy Campus, the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Legislative Council voted to approve girls flag football as a sanctioned sport and to add a shot clock for boys and girls basketball at the varsity level, among a variety of other proposals and committee reports.

The latest MaxPreps track and field rankings as of Thursday are available on the organization’s web site with several athletes from the San Luis Valley in a position to qualify for their respective state tournaments. The Top 18 athletes in each event in Classes 5A, 4A, 3A and 2A will qualify for the state meet. In Class 1A, the Top 9 in sprints and hurdles, the Top 12 in distances and the Top 10 in field events will punch their ticket to state. An athlete is restricted to competing in only four events at state.

The season came to an end for the Alamosa High School girls soccer team as it was defeated by fourth-ranked Delta 6-0 in the first round of the Class 3A State Tournament Thursday at Delta.

There was an error in Friday’s article about Dwight Catalano. It was implied that he was a part of all of Colorado’s Motocross promotions. He is only a part of the promotions in the San Luis Valley.

The Alamosa High School girls golf team hosted its annual tournament Wednesday at Cattails Golf Course with the Lady Mean Moose finishing in second place.

Dwight Catalano was presented with the prestigious Legends and Heroes Award last Saturday at a Supercross event at Empower Field in Denver. The Legends and Heroes Award is given to racers that have made a difference nationally and put down footprints that have lasted.

The Sierra Grande baseball team has advanced to regional action in Class 1A and it will face Flatirons Academy Saturday a 12:30 p.m. at Byers High School. The Panthers are the 15th seed and the Buffalos are the second seed.

The Alamosa High School baseball team hosted Monte Vista in its home finale Tuesday at Ortega Middle School. However, the home field didn’t help the Mean Moose as they lost to the Pirates 13-7.

The annual Monte Vista Invitational girls golf tournament became a dual meet as the Lady Pirates hosted Alamosa Tuesday at the Monte Vista Golf Course. Monte Vista won the dual with a final score of 330, compared to 349 for the Lady Mean Moose.

Ben Tibbitts is a junior at Centauri High School. However, neither Centauri nor any other school in the San Luis Valley fields a boys swimming team, he makes the long journey to Pueblo to compete on the Pueblo County team.
