Four San Luis Valley boys golfers participated in the first round of the Class 3A State Tournament Monday at Pinehurst Country Club in Denver. The Monte Vista High School boys golf team is currently in 10th place with a score of 245. Leading the Pirates is Kaden Mellott who is tied for 21st with a 77. Liam Ellithorpe is tied for 48th with an 83, and Ryker Anderson is tied for 60th with an 85.
The Alamosa High School girls cross country team won the Salida Cross Country Classic last Saturday.
The 10th Annual Adams State University Baseball fundraising golf tournament will take place Oct. 16 at Cattails Golf Course.
It was a good night for the Alamosa High School football team Friday at the AHS Stadium. The Mean Moose honored long-time football coach Manny Wasinger at halftime. Then they had a strong second half to open Tri-Peaks League play with a 28-20 win over eighth-ranked La Junta.
The Sierra Grande High School football team played its second game on its new field, John Roybal Jr. Field on Friday. It remained undefeated on the new field. In fact, it was the Panthers’ second straight victory by a lop-sided shutout as they defeated Sangre de Cristo 67-0.
The Sangre de Cristo High School volleyball team hosted league rival Centennial Tuesday at the Lady Thunderbirds’ gym. The Lady T-Birds came away with the victory sweeping the Lady Rams by scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-11.
The Alamosa High School boys cross country team won the McGinn Cross Country Challenge last Saturday at Pagosa Springs.

Last season, the Alamosa High School softball team split a pair of games with James Irwin. The loss was a Tri-Peaks League game. This year the Lady Mean Moose were looking to avoid that and they were successful. After winning the non-league contest at Colorado Springs earlier in the year, Alamosa recorded the sweep as it scored a 12-0 victory at the Lee Field Complex.
The fifth-ranked Alamosa High School volleyball team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end as it was defeated by Bayfield in four sets Saturday at the AHS gym.
After starting the season with a strong schedule which included two tough losses, the ninth-ranked and defending Class 1A state champion Centauri High School football team hosted Bayfield, traditionally one of the strongest teams in Class 2A. But the Falcons were up to the challenge as they defeated the Wolverines by a score of 33-14.
After not playing on its home campus for the better part of a year, the Sierra Grande High School football team finally opened the new John Roybal Jr. Field on Friday. It was a good day for a field opening as the Panthers defeated Mountain Valley 57-0.
The Alamosa High School gymnastics team competed at home for the first time this season as the Lady Mean Moose hosted Pueblo Central and Canon City. The Lady Mean Moose exceeded their expectations as they defeated both teams. Alamosa scored 157.15 points, Pueblo Central tallied 152.8 and Canon City had a score of 137.7.
The Alamosa High School softball team got back into the win column on Tuesday as it defeated Gunnison 12-2 at the Lee Field Complex.
Four boys golfers from the San Luis Valley qualified to compete, and one more will be an alternate at the Class 3A State Tournament. The five golfers qualified at the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament which took place Tuesday at Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez.
The Adams State University football team was looking to record its first win of the season Saturday at Rex Field as the Grizzlies hosted the 21st-ranked Colorado School of Mines. The Grizzlies only trailed 14-10 early in the second quarter and they had two more opportunities to score later in the period. However, the Orediggers were able to keep Adams State out of the end zone both times. It was all Mines after that as it rolled to an 84-10 win.
After suffering its first loss of the season last week, the seventh-ranked Sanford High School football team was looking to get back into the win column as it hosted Fowler Friday at SHS Field. The Mustangs roared out to a 34-0 lead late in the first half. The Grizzlies were not willing to roll over and die as they scored touchdowns in the second, third and fourth periods. But Sanford was able to roll to a 56-22 win.
Pete Atkins of Monte Vista recorded a hole-in-one Thursday at Cattails Golf Course. Atkins’ ace came on the fourth hole and he used a 13-degree hybrid to cover the 140-yard distance. Witnesses included Junior Atencio, Jeff Rayburn, Paul Lemon and Dave Broyles.
The Sanford High School volleyball team opened its Class 2A Southern Peaks League season on Thursday as it hosted Trinidad at the SHS gym. The Lady Mustangs got the league season going in the right direction as they scored a three-set sweep of the Lady Miners.
