COLORADO SPRINGS — El Pomar Trustees approved $82,000 allocated to 11 nonprofit organizations and government agencies in the San Luis Valley region at the Foundation’s May Trustees meeting. Through the Foundation’s grant making process, the following organizations were awarded grants: 

ALAMOSA COUNTY — Kayleigh Garcia and Joaquin Salinas were recently awarded the Bright Future Scholarship. 

ALAMOSA — On July 10, a one-year anniversary celebration was held at the Hope in the Valley addiction recovery center in Alamosa.  David Herrera, Community Engagement Coordinator with Hope in the Valley, told the Valley Courier that over one hundred well-wishers attended the event, underscoring the crucial role of community support in the center's success. 

ALAMOSA — Phil Weiser, Colorado’s attorney general and 2026 candidate for the Democratic nomination to be governor, pledged to the people of Colorado to block the policy agenda of President Trump in those areas that were bad for the state of Colorado and its people. Six months into the administration, Weiser is proving time and again that he is true to his word.

ANTONITO — The staff at the Colorado State University (CSU) Extension office in the San Luis Valley will offer a workshop on July 10 and July 11 for ranchers.  

ALAMOSA — As of press time on Thursday, H.R. 1 – otherwise known as the “Big, Beautiful Bill” – had not yet been up for a final vote as Rep. Hakeem Jeffries had already been speaking on the floor of the House for almost six hours in an attempt to delay the vote.  

SANGRE de CRISTO MOUNTAINS — On a recent hike on the South Zapata Lake Trail, I was pleasantly surprised to encounter a trail crew building a pedestrian and equine bridge across South Zapata Creek. This trail, located in the scenic Sangre de Cristo Mountains is not the popular trail to the falls, it is the more challenging 9.3-mile out-and-back hike to the lake. The bridge, strategically placed at a point where the creek can be particularly challenging to cross, will greatly enhance the hiking experience for both hikers and those on horseback. 

ALAMOSA — Highly talented artist Nikki Kaminski will have her work on exhibit in Milagro’s through the month of July. As she describes her work, Kaminski, who is based in Alamosa, blends soul visions (the inner landscape) with the beauty she finds in the natural world (the outer landscape). 

A festive Independence Day celebration began Friday morning with a parade hosted by the Young Professionals of Alamosa. About 30 floats participated, delighting the crowd that lined Main Street.

A celebration of the life of Bob Phillips to be held on July 13, 2:00 p.m. at Society Hall.

Crestone will host Independence Day events throughout the day on July 4.

ALAMOSA – Adams State University is proud to announce the successful five-year reauthorization of its educator preparation programs, as unanimously approved by the Colorado State Board of Education during regular meeting in May. This reauthorization affirms the quality, effectiveness, and continued impact of the School of Education and School of Counselor Education in preparing the next generation of educators and school leaders. 

ALAMOSA — On Thursday, June 26, Representative Matt Martinez was formally recognized by the leadership at San Luis Valley Health for his support of rural healthcare and his advocacy for key pieces of legislation this term. Rep. Martinez, who represents Colorado House District 62 and is the Majority Co-Whip, has been a vocal advocate for rural healthcare in Colorado since being elected to his position in 2023.  

COSTILLA COUNTY — The Costilla County Sheriff’s Office reported that early in the morning on Monday, June 23, a visitor to the Shrine of the Stations of the Cross in San Luis found a deceased body on the steps. With assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigations, Costilla County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation.   

Senator Hickenlooper's Constituent Advocate team will be at the Recreation Center in Alamosa on Saturday, June 28, from 10am to 4pm. This team is able to help with a wide variety of issues.

While hiking in a remote area of Saguache County, a hiker discovered what turned out to be the remains of 55-year-old Edna Quintana. Ms. Quintana was first reported missing in May of 2023. Our deepest sympathies to her family.

ALAMOSA — Christian Worship band, Northgate Revival will be in concert on Sunday, June 29, at 2 p. m., at Calvary Bible Chapel in Alamosa. This is a free event, and open to the public. 

ALAMOSA — Wednesday night’s meeting of Alamosa City Council was shorter than usual, coming in at less than an hour. But council made good use of the time, passing 3 ordinances on 2nd reading; celebrating Alamosa Public Library’s (APL) 50th anniversary of their Summer Reading program and getting an important progress report on the Mayor’s Challenge in raising funds for construction of the Little Learners Academy from Aaron Miltenberger, President and CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley (BGCSLV).  

DENVER — Guadalupe Parish Credit Union recently announced that Robert A. Chavez, President and Chief Executive Officer, has been appointed by Colorado Governor Jared Polis to serve on the Division of Financial Services Board of Directors.
