SAN LUIS VALLEY — Wreaths Across America, a non-profit organization, was formed as an extension of the Arlington Wreath Project. The Arlington Wreath program was started by Morrill Worcester in 1992 with the donation and laying of 5,000 Christmas wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery. This became an annual journey for Worcester. 

ALAMOSA — The SLV Health annual Years of Service banquet took place at Adams State University in August. Honorees who marked their 10- through 35-year anniversaries were invited to dinner with a guest. 

ALAMOSA – Adams State University President David Tandberg, Ph.D., and the Honorable Ambassador Ken Salazar invite the public to meet and greet the new Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center Director, Paul Formisano, Ph.D. 

ALAMOSA – Adams State University is dedicated to the safety and well-being of all students, faculty, and staff. The campus community now has an award-winning uSafeUS app, to improve safety and reinforce consent and how to report sexual assault, relationship violence or stalking. 

SLV Appliance, 239 Walker Rd., Alamosa, celebrates their new business and membership with the Alamosa Chamber of Commerce on Sept. 19.  

ALAMOSA – Adams State University is proud to host Tom Bruscino, Ph.D., ’99, a former football star and currently professor in the Department of Military Strategy, Planning, and Operations at the U. S. Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Penn. His talk begins at 12 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27, in McDaniel Hall 101. 

I am excited to announce that I am running for re-election for Alamosa County Commissioner, District 1. I was born and raised in Alamosa County, I attended Alamosa High School, I have a bachelor's and master's degree from Adams State University, I am a small business owner with my husband, and we have a small ranch.

I have called the San Luis Valley home for nearly five decades. Married with four children and four grandchildren, I am deeply rooted in the community I serve. With over 30 years in law enforcement, including roles as a police chief and detective, I have dedicated my life to public safety and community well-being.

SAGUACHE – On Sept. 11, first responders participated in a parade held on 4th Street in Saguache. The street was lined with people happily watching as the local fire and rescue trucks, Saguache County Sheriff trucks, and a Saguache County ambulance, drove down the street with their lights and sirens on, in remembrance of the 9/11 tragedy.   

ALAMOSA — Regular visitors to the Alamosa Family Recreation Center will notice the weight room has recently been renovated. 

ALAMOSA – Society Hall is excited to bring Colorado native and multi-instrumentalist singer songwriter Erik Stucky to the stage. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at Society Hall, 400 Ross Ave., Alamosa.  

ALAMOSA – The fun, free carnival returns during Adams State University Homecoming. The popular, community event begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, on the North Campus Green. 

ALAMOSA – Adams State University has a variety of events planned for Hispanic Heritage Month, including “A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Concert” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, in Richardson Hall Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. 

SAN LUIS – Carol Gurule of the CSU Extension is excited about a new addition that the Sangre de Cristo Heritage Center and Museum has added to its grounds. 

MONTE VISTA – Richard Gottlieb was all smiles, wearing a golden crown, as he posed for a picture on Sept. 7 next to his chocolate dipped birthday cake, adorned with candles that held the numbers 99.  According to the Colorado Veterans Community Living Center at Homelake, where he lives, he is the oldest living Veteran at the center. 

SAGUACHE COUNTY — The 35th Crestone Energy Fair will be held in Crestone this weekend. It will showcase innovative, sustainable, and regenerative ideas in construction, lifestyle, and community. 

ALAMOSA — San Luis Valley Rural Philanthropy Days participants enjoyed a block party on San Juan Avenue in Alamosa on Wednesday, Sept. 11. 

ALAMOSA — SLVH hosted Senator Michael Bennet on a tour of the workforce housing project along with a brief tour of the Regional Medical Center in Alamosa on Sept. 3. SLVH received funding to remodel the “Pike Apartments” on the RMC campus from Congressional Directed Spending appropriation.  

GREAT SAND DUNES NATIONAL PARK and PRESERVE — On Saturday, Sept. 14, kick off Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about and celebrating the San Luis Valley's Hispanic heritage. All events are free, but regular park entrance fees are in effect. 

ALAMOSA – The McFarland High School cross country team became a legend in 1987 after winning the California State Meet. Coached by Jim White, the team championship was chronicled in the 2015 Disney movie “McFarland USA.”
