Viola “Vi” Maria Peña, 87

...

Viola “Vi” Maria Peña, age 87, a resident of Los Lunas, NM, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 9, 2017. She was a member of San Clemente Catholic Church.

Vi was raised by her grandfather in Alamosa, Co. She then took care of him until he passed at age 98. Vi’s loving brother and caregiver Carlos Peña moved her to Los Lunas in 1990 to be closer to family. Viola worked as a “grandmother” in the Foster Grandparent Program for many years where she made many friends. Vi dedicated herself to prayer, enjoyed arts and crafts, and loved to crochet and knit. She made beautiful pieces. One such piece, along with a committee of 15 at Sacred Heart Parish in Alamosa, Co., was a tapestry “Our Lady of Guadalupe” highlighted on a plaque in the foyer of the church. One of Vi’s favorite Bible verses was Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Rafaelita; Grandfather Carlos; brothers, Carlos, Gilbert, Fred, and Robert Peña. Vi is survived by her sister, Marcia Locke; sister-in-law, Mabel C. Peña; niece and caregiver, Gloria Peña-Chavez and husband, Thomas; nephews, Johnny Michael, Carlos Jr. and Mark; nieces, Mona Lisa and JoAnn. She is also survived by many other wonderful nieces and nephews and loving caregivers and friends. All services were held at San Clemente Catholic Church on Friday, April 21, 2017, in Los Lunas, New Mexico.
