Two die in shooting

RIO GRANDE COUNTY — The Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the October 6 shooting deaths of Leonard Leyba, 45, and Frank Leyba, 19, according to a statement released on Monday by Sheriff Brian Norton.

On Friday, Oct. 6, at 7:11 p.m. the Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Office was advised of a possible shooting at 6943 North County Road 5 East.

Responding deputies arrived on scene, entered the residence and found Leonard Leyba along with Frank Leyba, both having suffered gunshot wounds, in a room in the residence.

Frank Leyba was transported from the residence by the Center ambulance with a single gunshot wound in the head and was pronounced deceased at the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa.

Leonard Leyba was pronounced deceased at the scene.

There is an active investigation being conducted by the Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Office.

There is no evidence at this time that the public’s safety is in jeopardy, according to the sheriff’s office.
