Trial set in San Acacio shooting case

SAN ACACIO — Trial will begin in December for a Costilla County man who is accused of shooting a utility worker here in September of last year.

James Shaffer, 35, is accused of going to a location near CR12 and CRN in San Acacio and firing shots, several of which struck an unidentified utility worker.

He faces two counts of Class Three Felony attempted murder 2; two counts of felony menacing with a real or simulated weapon, Class 5 Felonies; two counts of Class 3 Misdemeanor reckless endangerment; and two counts of using of a weapon in a violent crime, sentence enhancers.

Costilla County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at 4 p.m. Sept. 22, 2016 on a report of shots fired and discovered the victim, who suffered serious injuries. Shaffer was taken into custody without incident a short time later.

Bond was set at $100,000 cash or surety, then was reduced to $50,000 Nov. 1 of the same year.A five-day trial is set to begin Dec. 4.
