Time to HEAL

ALAMOSA — The City of Alamosa wants you, the citizens, to be healthy. All of you. And with that, they unanimously passed the HEAL resolution.

Prior to the vote, they listened to a presentation from Julie George of HEAL. “Even though we’re still the healthiest state in the nation … our kids are 23rd in the nation and that’s alarming,” George said.

She went on to explain that the campaign started six years ago in June, creating access to healthy living.

“It’s about policy, that’s the groundwork. You think about health when you’re thinking about and making policy so your residents live healthy lives,” George said, adding that she thinks the city has doing a good job thus far with various projects.

“You’re well on your way here…I think you’re your own success story.”

The program consists of four levels: eager, active, fit and elite. George said, because of previous efforts, the city already is at the “active level.”

She added that 13-15 municipalities in the state have achieved the “elite” level. “It’s a lot about celebrating accomplishments,” she said.

Several citizens came forward to voice their opposition to the trail on the south side of town, near River Road.

This was a hot topic at the city council’s April 3 meeting, with nearly 90 minutes of public comments. Some were for the path, others against.

Last night, most voiced their concerns about vagrancy and fires as they’ve seen fire rings in that area.

In addition, citizens complained about the trash in the area and don’t want to see it worsen. Crime is a concern as well, apparently there have been break ins and the perpetrators came from the river area.
