Tigers host Mauraders for a non-conference game

ALAMOSA — Del Norte’s baseball team (0-1) will play today against the Mitchell Mauraders (4-3).  This season the Tigers have gotten off on the wrong foot having taken it on the chin from Alamosa in a 24-0 game. The Tigers have had a week and a half to mull over where things went wrong, now they will go back in action to put theory to practice.

The Tigers went 5-12 just last year and are looking to continue improving. With the graduation of Del Norte’s most efficient hitter Cody Martinez the team lead will likely fall to their second most efficient Carlos Parra. Last year Parra held a .486 batting average. Parra was second on the team in RBI’s a title he shared with Niclo Cisneros and Narsiso Rodriguez, both holdovers to the 2018 season.

In the field, Parra made it through the 2017 season without making any errors holding a perfect fielding percentage on 34 chances. With the team lead for put-outs having gone to graduate Martinez, the Tigers will look elsewhere for defensive production. Second in defensive production was Diego Heredia with 38 put outs.

The Tigers’s opponents on Friday had their own struggles last season taking a 6-13 record in the 4A class.  Even with the below average record the Marauders showed good talent with two batters hitting atleast .500 one of them Brysynt Clark-Perez has shown himself to be a jack-of-all-trades on the diamond. Clark-Perez also led the Marauders in categories such as batters struck out (63) and stolen bases (32).

The Tigers and Mauraders will meet in Del Norte at 3 p.m. today.
