Three SLV girls golfers qualify for state tournament
ALAMOSA – A total of nine high school girls golf teams converged on Cattails Golf Course for the Class 3A Region 4 Tournament on Tuesday with the hopes of qualifying for next week’s state tournament.
Three golfers from the San Luis Valley were successful as Alamosa’s Morgan Ortega and Kayla Medina, and Monte Vista’s Brooke Hoffstaetter were state qualifiers.
Ortega finished the highest of any of the local golfers as she placed 12th with a 102.
“It was a little bit tough today, but we finished good,” Ortega said.
Medina finished in 18th place with a 112.
“The course was good, but it was cold,” Medina said.
Hoffstaetter took 17th place with a 111.
“It was pretty good out there,” Hoffstaetter said. “It was a little chilly but other than that it was good.”
All three state qualifiers are looking to do well at state as well as having fun.
“My goal is to make it in the Top 25 this year since it is my first year,” Ortega said. “But hopefully I’ll just do my best.”
“I just want to play good,” Medina said.
“I just want to try my best,” Hoffstaetter said. “I don’t expect to place. I just want to go out there and have fun.”
Other Alamosa golfers who competed include Miya Spangler who took 27th with a 119, and Kailyn Vigil who finished 28th with a 124.
Rounding out the Monte Vista field were Annika Holder who tied for 25th with a 118, Ellaree Rockey who was 29th with a 133, and Anastasia Sanchez who was 33rd with a 167.
Colorado Academy was the team champion with 277, and Vail Mountain took second with 282. Both schools have qualified their entire team to state.
Aspen’s Lenna Persson was the individual medalist with a nine-over-par 80. Vail Mountain’s Logan Nobrega was second with an 84, and Montezuma-Cortez’s Reagan Hafey finished third with an 89.
The state tournament will take place May 31 and June 1 at the Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield.
