Temporary sign posting

ALAMOSA–The Alamosa Police Department reminds citizens that it is illegal to post signs—including yard sale and garage sale signs—on utility poles, sign poles, traffic lights and electrical boxes. If your signs have gone missing, the city has likely removed them.

All signs posted can pose a safety problem for drivers and pedestrians by distracting motorists, creating blind spots and presenting hazards for people walking. Nails, screws, tacks, and plastic ties used on utility poles are hazardous for utility workers.

Most of these signs are never removed and quickly litter the streets detracting from the appearance of our roadways and neighborhoods.

To stay safe and protect the community, residents are encouraged to place their yard or garage sale signs on private property (with permission).

Please announce your yard and garage sales in local newspapers via classified.

The City of Alamosa has an adopted ordinance restricting such actions:

Sec. 11-2. - Handbills, posters; area where distribution prohibited, exception.

No person shall distribute, scatter, deposit or place, or cause to be placed, in, upon or about any street, alley or other public place, or in, upon, or about any private property belonging to any person, or in or upon any automobile or other vehicle belonging to any other person, any handbill, circular or other printed advertising of any kind. This section shall not apply to newspapers and political advertisements.
