Tell Senators to Support H.R.1 “For the People Act”

Dear Fellow Citizens:

Please call U.S. Senators to request support for H.R.1, the “For the People Act” passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on March 3, 2021: “To expand Americans’ access to the ballot box, reduce the influence of big money in politics, and strengthen ethics rules for public servants and for other purposes.” Read the full bill at congress.gov.

This is a crucial step toward protecting our elections, and building a more inclusive democracy. The U.S. Senate will soon introduce their version of the Act.

The “John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act” is another bill Congress must pass to protect voting rights (introduced in the Senate as the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act), named in honor of the late civil rights icon and longtime congressman. In 2013, in a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court eroded key parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA), which protected voters from racial discrimination and intimidation. This decision significantly weakened the VRA’s protections and led to numerous states passing new anti-voter laws that restrict access to the ballot box and cut the number of polling places in our communities.
