Sunday crash results in fatality on La Veta Pass

COSTILLA COUNTY — The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash on Highway 160, La Veta Pass, which resulted in one fatality.

At approximately 11:27 a.m., on Sunday, February 3, a white 2009 Pontiac G6 sedan was eastbound on Highway 160 near milepost 277.4. The Pontiac lost control in a left hand corner and rotated into the westbound lane where it collided with the front of a westbound, white 2011 Freightliner truck-tractor with its right side. The Pontiac came to rest on the westbound shoulder, and the Freightliner truck-tractor came to rest in the westbound lane of travel.

The driver of the Pontiac, Milanyela Meza, 20, of Westminster, was pronounced dead on scene. The driver of the Freightliner truck-tractor sustained no injuries.

Excessive speed for the conditions is considered the primary factor in this crash, which is still under investigation.
