State tournament gridiron action on the slate

With the regular season put to rest, valley football teams can now start looking forward to meaningful games. The weekend decided some tournament-related contests.

Alamosa (6-3) played in a ‘win and you’re in’ game against league opponent Pagosa Springs, the Mean Moose got off to a slow start and fell behind eventually losing 33-22 relenting the postseason spot to the Pirates.

Other squads were more fortunate. In the 1A Class, Centauri (8-1) was tied with Monte Vista for league wins entering the final week of regular-season play. But Centauri’s home matchup with the struggling Ignacio Bobcats made for a leisurely stroll into the state tournament bracket. The Falcons posted all 53 of their points in the first half coasting to a 53-21 win at home. The first week of the postseason is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9th, Centauri will host Flatirons Academy (6-3) of Westminster, Colo. at 1 p.m.

8-Man will see two valley teams move on. Sanford (9-0) looked unbothered, doing what they’ve been all year to clear opponent Sargent Friday night. Oddly enough the 51-0 shutout was only the second-highest margin of victory for Sanford all year, the biggest coming over Dove Creek in a 64-12 blowout the week prior. Sanford is seeded second only to Sedgewick County (9-0) who have taken every 8-Man state title for the past 4 years. In the first round of the playoffs, Sanford will host No. 15 Holly. Holly-Sanford is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday, Nov. 9.

The second team advancing to the postseason from 8 Man will be Sargent (6-3). The Farmers only three losses came against the strength of the class; Sanford (9-0), Fowler (9-0) and Mancos (8-1). Despite that, Sargent still put together enough meaningful games throughout the year to extend their season. Sargent’s first game in the playoffs will be an away affair, Sargent will go on the road to face Pikes Peak Christian at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9.
