Stand off ends peacefully

MONTE VISTA — The Monte Vista Police Department was dispatched to the 700 block of Washington Ave. on Monday, Oct. 22 at 5:11 p.m. Officers had received information that Christopher Archuleta, a wanted fugitive with a felony warrant from the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office, was inside a residence on the block. Monte Vista police had also received information that Archuleta had stolen a vehicle and firearm earlier that morning.

When officers attempted to contact Archuleta, he barricaded himself in a room and ignored officers’ commands, threatening to shoot law enforcement, bystanders inside the home and himself. With the assistance of the Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado State Patrol, officers evacuated the home and surrounding residences.

After a nearly seven-hour standoff and negotiation, Archuleta was taken into custody. No one was harmed during the incident. Additional charges against Archuleta have been forwarded to the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and are pending.
