Square Peg supports Sexual Assault Awareness Month

ALAMOSA — On Wednesday, April 25th, Square Peg held their biweekly trivia night, but this night was different from most trivia nights: it had a very special purpose. Square Peg partnered with Tu Casa, Inc. to support their mission to raise community awareness.

This event was the first time Square Peg has sponsored a non-profit at their trivia nights, and $1 per beer purchased was donated to Tu Casa, Inc. April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Square Peg joined Tu Casa to promote awareness by adorning Tu Casa t-shirts that support victims. Their shirts read, “I believe her” a testament to the fact that victims are never alone and there will always be agencies, like Tu Casa, that take all disclosures of sexual assault seriously.

April 25th was also National Denim Day, an annual event meant to raise awareness for victims of sexual assault.  In 1999, Italy’s highest appeals court was accused of sexism after ruling it is impossible for a woman to be raped if she is wearing tight jeans. The court decided the victim must have cooperated in taking her pants off and consequently, it was a consensual act.  This ruling overturned the conviction of the perpetrator and female Italian legislators began wearing jeans in support of the victim in this case. To this day, this awareness event is still recognized during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. During Square Peg’s Trivia Night last week you could see the support by the amount of people wearing denim.

There was an anonymous donation to Tu Casa at the event and Tu Casa was able to raise over $200 to continue to provide free and confidential services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
