Scholarship overcomes adversity

MONTE VISTA — The Sgt. Glen E. Martinez Memorial Scholarship 5K Run/Walk and Veterans Golf Tournament which is usually held on Memorial Weekend was canceled due to the COVID-19 situation to maintain the safety of all participants and their families. Unfortunately, the event will not be rescheduled again this year.

Despite that, awardees will still be selected and presented scholarships. Scholarship donors have awarded the $1000 to each two of the most deserving Monte Vista High School Seniors who excelled in Academics, Athletics and Community Service and are pursuing higher education. For the 2020 scholarship cycle, the two outstanding seniors are Levi Trujillo and Larissa Medina.

This scholarship began in 2009 when Glen a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, was killed in action on May 02, 2008, while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Glen was a studious Monte Vista High School graduate who loved his sports, believed his academics were very important and was involved in community service. Ron and Carol Martinez, Glen’s parents, set up the scholarship in his memory
