Sangre de Cristo Heritage Center celebrates funding

SAN LUIS — The Sangre de Cristo Heritage Center has received a $199,921 grant from the History Colorado State Historical Fund to preserve it for future generations. Please consider joining the Costilla County Economic Development Council, the State Historical Fund, local public officials, and Colorado state legislators as they celebrate this latest grant to preserve the heritage of this incredible historic and public resource.

They will mark the occasion with the presentation of a big check on Wednesday, September 6 at 10 a.m. at the Sangre de Cristo Heritage Center, 401 South Church Place, San Luis. The presentation and remarks will be followed by a tour.

This project will rehabilitate the historic theater in the Sangre de Cristo Heritage Center, including the restoration of its character-defining features—the wood floors, plaster and adobe walls, the vigas and latillas, and the historic stage. It will also include the rehabilitation of the non-original Projection Room to allow for use as a director’s booth for the theater, and rehabilitate the non-historic boiler room into dressing rooms. A new baseboard heating system will be installed along with new replica lighting, new power outlets, exit signs, and emergency lighting.

This project is important for the development of heritage tourism in San Luis and contributes to the development of programs that promote Hispano culture. The theater will be used by the Canto Al Pueblo Cultural Arts group for plays, by community groups for meetings, by artists and sculptors to exhibit their work on Hispano culture, and by educators for workshops and seminars.
