Sanford’s FCCLA chapter serves community

SANFORD — Family, Consumer, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), the only national career and technical student organization with the family as its central focus, is working to improve members, families, and communities in Sanford.

Currently, there are only two active chapters in the San Luis Valley—Centauri and Sanford. The Sanford FCCLA Program currently has 23 hardworking members who strive to improve the world around them. With the help of adviser JoAnn Bagwell, the chapter has already been able to make a difference this year.

A great opportunity the chapter participated in was the making of ornaments and providing company for the elderly at the Rio Grande Nursing Home in La Jara. The chapter also sewed bags that attach to the elderly people’s walkers. These bags will help the elderly carry their accessories.

One project has turned its focus to the drug and alcohol problem that plagues the Valley. Some other projects are working on the effects of global warming and improving the environment. Other students are working on a project that has turned its focus to the elementary students—improving positive attitudes and overcoming challenges. Students are also working hard on a project that involves veterans—giving thanks to those who have served and continue to serve this country.

A graduated student from Sanford High School, Sierra Edgar, had the opportunity to work as an FCCLA state officer. She says, “FCCLA not only taught me leadership skills, but it also helped me find my true self. Through FCCLA I was able to explore places that I never dreamed I would explore. It taught me what really matters in life—family and communities!”

FCCLA offers a wonderful opportunity for students to gain leadership and organizational skills, responsibility, and compassion through many unique projects each year.
