San Luis Valley Quilt Guild Demonstration Day set

MONTE VISTA—To commemorate National Quilting Day, the San Luis Valley Quilt Guild will conduct a public demonstration day March 18 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Monte Vista United Methodist Church, 215 Washington Avenue. Use the side basement entrance.

Both novice and experienced quilters are invited to observe and question both traditional and innovative aspects of quilting. Guests will be eligible for door prizes every half hour.

A craft sale of items made by SLV Quilt Guild members will be available. A show of quilted wall hangings and small items will be displayed.

Tickets for the 2017 guild's raffle quilt will be available at $1 each or six for $5. Raffle funds are used for charity quilt supplies and for quilting education. More than 100 quilts are donated each year for the Alamosa hospital's infusion unit and to victims' advocates for traumatized children.

This year's bargello quilt top was donated by guild member Judy Freeark who died in 2016. It was completed by other members for the fund-raiser.

Demonstrations will include the newly popular Sue Spargo styled applique, embroidery and embellishment techniques  as well as beading as embellishments for quilting. Making quilts from tee shirts is another technique being shown. Needle-turned applique will also be demonstrated. Innovations in traditional rotary cutting, binding, hanging sleeves, and label design will be presented.
