Saguache museum hosts Sunday program

SAGUACHE — The public is invited to the Saguache County Museum’s Sunday Afternoon Free Program on June 4 at 1:30 p.m. Clifton Simmons, a senior at Adams State University, will present the agricultural research he did on the water systems at Machu Picchu, Peru, in South America. And, he will share his exciting story of his trip down the Amazon River.

He will be showing pictures of his incredible journey as well.

Simmons is a Porter Scholar, majoring in geography, and will graduate in December.

Refreshments will be served. Donations are always appreciated.

Here is some background on Machu Picchu and the Amazon River:

Machu Picchu is an Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, above the Urubamba River valley. Built in the 15th century and later abandoned, it’s renowned for its sophisticated dry-stone walls that fuse huge blocks without the use of mortar, intriguing buildings that play on astronomical alignments and panoramic views. Its exact former use remains a mystery.

The Amazon River, usually abbreviated to Amazon, in South America is the largest river by discharge volume of water in the world and according to some, the longest in length.
