Regional wrestling tournaments underway

SAN LUIS VALLEY — Starting Friday nine teams from 10 different schools concentrated here in the valley took part in three different regional tournaments to decide who was going to the state finals. Alamosa hosted their own tournament; Center, Centennial/Sierra Grande, Del Norte, Sargent and Mountain Valley went to Sanford. And Centauri and Monte Vista traveled north to Pueblo to take part in Pueblo Central’s tournament.
After the first day of action Alamosa got off to a good start with nine wrestlers in the quarterfinals poised to compete for first place. Among Alamosa’s nine, Reis Martinez, in his first action since having torn his ACL during the football season. Martinez defeated Brent Gray from Olathe and advanced to the quarter finals where he will match with Brian De La Rosa from Rifle today.  

In Pueblo, Centauri also put their best foot forward advancing 5 wrestlers to the quarterfinals. Number one ranked Brandon Buhr is on course to possibly meet with number 15 Jacob McCarley from Manitou Springs in the final match at 145 today.   

Monte Vista will also be represented in the quarterfinals in Pueblo with three wrestlers making it through the first couple rounds. Jacob Chavez will hope to keep his success going today with a fall on the books and no ranked wrestlers in his path at 160 pounds to the number one spot.

In Sanford, Del Norte as advanced five different wrestlers to the quarterfinals number two ranked Brett Benevides has the possibility to meet Center’s Jesus Hernandez-Ayala in the semifinals. Center has three wrestlers of their own ready to compete for a first place finish.

Sierra Grande/Centennial has also advanced three wrestlers to the quarters. Mountain Valley and Sanford each moved two wrestlers into position for first place contention in the quarterfinals. For Valley wrestling fans 126 pounds is a loaded weight class in Sanford. Richard Atencio of Sierra Grande/Centennial and Gavyn Smith will face each other to see who will make it to the semifinals. While on the other end of the bracket Isiah Wellman of Mountain Valley will need to clear no. 10 Colton Sims to earn the right to face Atencio/Smith.

Ethan Maxwell will wrestle for Sargent at 170 pounds. As Sargent’s lone entry to the quarterfinals. Maxwell’s weight class is another point of intrigue as all four wrestlers are top ranked in 2A wrestling, ranging from 6th to 14th.
