Regional weekend packed with valley volleyball

It’s that time of year, time for regional volleyball. A wealth of talent has loaded the field of play with plenty of local squads competing for a spot in the state bracket later this month. SLV schools compete in the 1A, 2A and 3A classes in volleyball and valley teams will be competing at all three levels this weekend.

At 3A Alamosa (20-3) is looking to earn their second berth to the state tournament in the past two years. The Moose finished their regular season two weeks ago. When all was said and done the Moose owned the No. 3 spot in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), had earned their league title and will be hosting their regional triangular. Both St. Mary’s Academy and Florence will be in town for Alamosa’s TRI on Saturday, Nov. 9. Alamosa vs. Florence is scheduled to be the first match of the afternoon scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. The Moose will also play in the third match of the day against St. Mary’s.

Also competing in 3A will be the Centauri Falcons. The Falcons (14-8) put together a solid run to the postseason winning 6 of their last 8 and earning the No. 21 seed for regionals. Centauri will be on the road for their triangular hosted by No. 4 Faith Christian along with DSST: College View. The Falcons will be playing in matches 2 and 3 of the afternoon the first match of the day will be taking place at noon.

Three schools from the valley will be represented at the 2A regionals this weekend. Del Norte (18-5) got stronger as the season continued, going undefeated through their final 9 games to claim a league title and the 11th seed in the regional round. Playing Saturday, Nov. 9th Del Norte will be hosting Swink and Holyoke. The Tigers will be playing in the first and third matches of the day, Del Norte vs. Holyoke will get things started at 10 a.m.

Sanford (13-8) put together a nice streak to close the season, taking 6 straight. Four of those wins happened at the Rye Invitational on Nov. 1-2, three of which counted towards tournament standings making Sanford tournament champions. Sanford will go on the road for their regional triangular, hosted by the No. 8 Fowler Bears. Seeded No. 17 Sanford will be playing in the second and third matches of the event. As of press time, a date and start time had not yet been announced.

Also on the road for regionals will be Sargent (12-11). The Farmers also performed well at their final tournament going 3-1. As the 34 seed Sargent will have the tall order of having to play up to both opponents; No. 3 Meeker and No. 22 Telluride. Sargent will be taking part in the first and second matches of the event. As of press time a date and start time has yet to be announced.

The 1A class will have Sangre de Cristo from the valley. The Thunderbirds (17-6) claimed a district tournament with Antonito, La Veta and Cotopaxi winning all three matches by a score of 3-1 this weekend. Sangre de Cristo will host the Cotopaxi Pirates and Norwood Mavericks this weekend. By RPI the Pirates and Mavericks are ranked 14th and 36th respectively. Things look good for SDC to advance to state play being that they hold a 2-0 record this year against the higher-ranked of their two opponents, Cotopaxi. Sangre will play in the first and third matches of the day, Sangre de Cristo vs. Cotopaxi will kick off the day at 10 a.m. Volleyball listings below, for complete volleyball regional brackets, be sure to visit CHSAANow.com
