Sierra Grand boys basketball defeats top-ranked ECA

ALAMOSA – For the second time in as many weeks, a No. 1-ranked team came to the San Luis Valley. And for the second time, the local team won the game.

On Jan. 15, the Centauri High School boys basketball team defeated then top-ranked St. Mary’s 70-64. Last Saturday, the Sierra Grande boys downed previously No. 1 Evangelical Christian Academy 57-39 at Blanca.

The Panthers jumped to a 16-9 lead after the first quarter, and they increased the lead to 32-22 at halftime. Sierra Grande led 41-31 after three quarters and then outscored the Eagles 16-8 in the fourth quarter.

Three Panthers scored in double figures. Brian Ontiveros led the way with 18 points, and Isiah Chairez and Thomas Archuleta both scored 14.

Sierra Grande (9-0) will travel to Creede on Friday.
