Myrna Louise Mestas

Longtime Fort Garland resident Myrna Louise (Sanchez) Mestas, 70, died September 21, 2022, at the Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango.

Myrna was born in San Luis, Colo., on July 7, 1952, to Cosme Sanchez and Mary (Trujillo) Sanchez.  She met the love of her life John Mestas and they were united in marriage June 9, 1973 in Chama, Colorado, enjoying more than 49 years together.

Myrna worked for over two decades as a beautician, owning and operating MyPlace Hair Styling in Fort Garland. She later sold her business and assumed a variety of office jobs in Park County and the San Luis Valley prior to retiring. She loved her family more than anything and enjoyed spending quality time with each of them. She loved traveling, photography, and tending to her flowers. 

Myrna is survived by her husband John Mestas of the family home; her son Daniel (Jenny) Mestas of Phoenix, AZ; her sister Charlene (Leroy) Lucero of Pueblo, Colo.; her brother Clarence Ricky (Gloria) Sanchez of Alamosa, Colo.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Cosme Sanchez, Jr., Joseph Sanchez, and Larry Paul Sanchez.

A Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa. A Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. following the visitation on Tuesday, September 27th at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Fort Garland. A Funeral Mass will be held at noon Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at the same church. Burial will follow services in the Blanca/Fort Garland Cemetery.
