ALAMOSA — Things ramped up nicely Saturday afternoon. As a prelude to the boys’ game Alamosa’s girls took the court and got things back on track with a 49-47 victory over the visiting Falcons.

Friday night Alamosa (14-5) saw their five-game winning streak snapped by the visiting Pagosa Springs Pirates (15-2). Meanwhile Centauri (13-5) was picking up a win over Montezuma-Cortez (7-10).

The two teams showed just how evenly matched they were playing to a 10-10 tie in the first quarter. Centauri would out pace the Moose to the second quarter to take a 22-14 lead thanks to 8 first quarter points from Mia Garcia and Melissa Wilson going 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Wilson would go on to lead the Falcons in scoring with 11 points.

Early in the second quarter Centauri’s Garcia would tweak her knee but despite the visible pain it caused would stay on the court, Garcia finished with 8 points on Saturday. Alamosa would engineer a 9-point swing started by sophomore Emily Lavier dropping her first three-point attempt of the day.  Centauri would utilize a 10-1 run of their own to take a 32-26 lead to the locker rooms.

With Centauri leading 37-33 at the start of the fourth, the stage was set for an 8 minute fight to the finish. A basket at a time Alamosa closed the distance to two points but neither team could seem to hold on to a lead. Alamosa’s Emily Lavier would put the Moose ahead only to have the game tied at 41 a minute later.

In the end, Sylvie Caton was rock solid for the Moose making good on two 'and-one's late for two three point plays. Caton and sophomore Lavier tied for Alamosa’s scoring lead with 15 points. Centauri’s three-point buzzer beater would come up short giving the Moose the victory.

With the win Alamosa sweeps Centauri on the season and holds the number two spot in the Intermountain League (IML) with an 8-2 league record. Centauri is number three in the IML with a 5-4 league record. Centauri will wrap their season Tuesday evening against the Monte Vista Pirates (3-14).

With a firm hold of the third spot in the IML Centauri will figure to host Monte Vista in the first round of district tournament play while Alamosa will face the highest remaining seed from the first round at Cortez for the semi-finals. If history is any indication expect an Alamosa-Centauri rematch to decide who faces Pagosa Springs in the IML championship.
