MONTE VISTA — Thursday night was senior night for Pirate Volleyball. For their last home game, Monte Vista took on another Pirate school in Olathe (5-10). Olathe won the battle of the Pirates by a score of 3-1.

Monte Vista (2-14) earned a little respite from the tough sledding earlier this month, at the Lake County Triangular. The Pirates got win number two at the expense of fellow valley school Center (1-16) that day by a 3-0 score.

Thursday night, the Pirates seemed to play in spurts. In the first set, things started pretty even with the two Pirate squads playing to a 4-4 tie, then Olathe separated themselves with a 6-point rally that was only interrupted by a service error.

Later in the first set Olathe would get going once again putting up four straight before Monte Vista’s Lily Henderhan would log a kill to give Monte the serve, trailing 15-9.

The host Pirates struggled to capitalize on their serves moving forward and Olathe led Monte Vista to the 25-15 conclusion of the first set.

The home team showed plenty of fight in the second set.

After going down 7-4, Monte Vista strung together four straight points – highlighted by a let-serve ace from Analysia Perea, to take the lead. Said lead would trade hands three more times to a 12-11 advantage for Olathe. This time it was a 5-point run for Monte Vista to push ahead. It would be the final lead change as Monte Vista paced the visitors to a 25-22 win.

Olathe would take the final two sets by identical 25-18 scores to claim the match by a score of 3-1.

Looking forward Monte Vista is scheduled for two straight games against Montezuma-Cortez. The first of the two a home meeting this Saturday at 2 p.m. the second a road match Thursday the 24th at 6 p.m. Monte Vista will then close the season with four games at the Gunnison Tournament on Nov. 2nd.
