MONTE VISTA – The eighth-ranked Alamosa High School wrestling team secured first place in the Intermountain League East on Thursday as the Mean Moose defeated Monte Vista 58-14 at the MVHS gym.

“It’s nice to win another league dual,” said Alamosa coach Rusty Johnson.

“There were a few of our guys who wrestled pretty well,” said Monte Vista coach Omar Gonzales.

The dual meet started at 150 pounds with Alamosa’s Kyler Liddell pinning Jacob Pacheco in five minutes even.

Monte Vista got its first win at 157 pounds as Jeremiah Baumgardner won by a 16-4 major decision over Jaxon Morgan. Baumgardner led 4-0 after the first period, and the lead increased to 8-0 after the second. Baumgardner put the match away in the third period.

Ryan Cordova won by forfeit at 165 pounds to increase the Mean Moose lead to 12-4.

The Pirates got their only win by fall at 175 as Jaxon Martinez pinned Aaron Ramirez. Martinez recorded the pin just before time expired in the third period.

James Sanchez then scored a win by fall over Matthew Wright at 285 pounds. Sanchez finished the match at the 3:50 mark and the Mean Moose led 24-10.

Jeremiah DeLaCerda and Matthew Rodriguez met in the 106-pound match, however, Rodriguez was injured in the second period and DeLaCerda won by default.

“It was 2-2 and they got into a scramble,” Gonzales. “I’m not sure what happened to his arm. He was coasting on his right arm it looks like he either dislocated it or broke it. I’m not quite sure.”

“It’s sad about that kid,” Johnson said. “You never want to see anybody get hurt. I just hope he’s okay enough to come back by the end of the year.”

The Mean Moose won the next two matches by forfeit as Anthony Griego (113) and Dempsey Gibbs (120) both picked up victories.

Dario Valdez then won by a 12-3 major decision at 126 pounds over Ethan Wolfe to extend Alamosa’s lead to 46-10. Valdez led 6-2 after the first period and 10-3 after the second.

Dyson Woodward then pinned Damian Lopez in the 132-pound match at the 3:57 mark.

Alamosa will travel to Denver on Saturday for the Abraham Lincoln Invitational. It will then face Pagosa Springs for the league championship Thursday in Pagosa Springs.

“The next couple of weeks will be busy for us,” Johnson said.
