ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School baseball team finished the regular season on Tuesday as it hosted Gunnison at Ortega Middle School.

The visiting Cowboys didn’t make it easy, but the Mean Moose were able to hold on to take a 9-7 victory.

“It was a little tougher than we should have made it,” said Alamosa coach Tony Kechter. “We gave up too many walks, too many free passes and too many errors that got them back in the game. We’re going to have to clean that up by Saturday.”

After a scoreless first inning, the Mean Moose took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second. Donovan Ramirez led off with a double, and Kiko Ruybal, who was courtesy-running for Ramirez went to third on a passed ball. Michael Madril was safe on a fielder’s choice, and Jayden Mizokami reached on an outfield error and Ruybal scored on the play.

Alamosa scored four more runs in the third. Hayden Shawcroft doubled and Madril followed with a walk. Mizokami doubled home both runners for a 5-0 lead.

West was safe on an error to score Mizokami, but West was forced out at second on Garcia’s ground ball. Sowards then tripled home Garcia to increase the lead to 7-0.

Gunnison got on the board with two runs in the top of the sixth. Mason Williams reached on an error, and Sam Buckhannan drew a walk. Hunter Vincent drove home Mason Williams, and Sam Buckhannan scored on a wild pitch.

The Cowboys scored four more times in the fifth. Tate Hicks got on first on a fielder’s choice and Justice Williams singled. Brendan Roy reached on an error to score Hicks, and Justice Williams and Roy both scored on wild pitches. Mason Williams and Duke Sloan both walked, and Mason Williams scored on Sam Buckhannan’s double to pull the Cowboys within 7-6.

The Mean Moose answered with two runs in their half of the fifth. Sowards doubled and he came home on Kade Jones’ single. Ramirez doubled for the second time to drive home Kade Jones and Alamosa led 9-6.

Gunnison attempted a rally in the seventh. Sam Buckhannan walked and Vicnent was safe on an error to put Sam Buckhannan on Third. He scored on Sky Wild’s sacrifice fly.

Vincent was left on base as the game ended.

Ramirez started at pitcher for Alamosa and he earned the win. He allowed six runs and four hits and he struck out two, walked three and he hit one batter. Madril relieved Ramirez in the fifth and he gave up no runs and two hits and he had two strikeouts, one walk and he hit one batter. Kade Jones finished the game and picked up the save. He surrendered one run and no hits.

The Mean Moose had 11 hits and they were led by Sowards who went 3-4 with a double, a triple and one RBI, and Ramirez who went 3-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Mizokami led in RBIs with three.

Alamosa finished the regular season with 12 wins and seven losses. It will now wait for its first round playoff opponent.

“It should keep us to where we should get to host on Saturday,” Kechter said. “That should have kept us in the Top 16 so that we get to host on Saturday. No matter who we play now, it’s going to be a battle every game. It doesn’t matter what seed now. We should know the seeding by Wednesday morning or afternoon.”
