Martha M. Atencio

ALAMOSA — Longtime Alamosa resident Martha M. Atencio, went home to be with the Lord in the company of her Angels on October 17, 2019. Martha was brought into the world on September 2, 1943 in Alamosa, the beloved daughter of Melecio Sandoval and Victoria Salazar Sandoval.  Martha was a kind, loving and exceptional wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend who was a member of the Sacred Heart League, Liturgy Committee and Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. On her free time, she enjoyed cooking, crocheting, collecting angels, going gambling, gardening, fishing, camping and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Above all, she kept them in her prayers constantly.

Martha will live on through her loving husband Gabriel Atencio of Alamosa; daughters Brenda (Armando) Jimenez of Alamosa, Beverly Mestas (Delbert DuPont), both of Alamosa; sons Frank Leroy (Ruby) Mestas of Chama, N.M.; Gilbert R. (Graciela) Mestas of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren Desirae Mestas, Brianna Mestas, Sarah Jimenez, Daniel (Lara) Jimenez, Jeremy (Jessica) Mestas, Natalie Mestas, Sean (Kalina) Mestas, Alfred Isaac (Fabian) Petross and Ashley Miller; great-grandchildren Aiden, Emma, Isley, Noah and DJ Jimenez, Abram and Maggie Mestas; step-children Michelle Miller of Canon City, Colo.; Michael (Patricia) Atencio of La Jara, Colo.; step-grandchildren Shelli Pattison, Devin Miller, Mike Atencio, David Atencio, Andrea Puente, step-great-grandchildren Sean Pattison, Marrissa Pattison, Malachi Guida, Autumn Atencio, Aubrey Puente; sisters Irene Ortega of Questa, N.M.; Edith(Tom) Steele of Hawaii; Jenny Mondragon of Northglenn, Colo.; Beatrice Perea of Denver; Teresa Marquez of Alamosa ; brothers Johnny Sandoval of Ely, Nev.; Dennis (Eva) Sandoval of Lafayette, Colo. She is also survived by her fur baby Chloe as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents Melecio and Victoria Sandoval, grandson Gilbert F. Mestas, Godson Nathan Mark Sandoval, parents who raised her Manuel and Elena Olguin, brothers Lucas Sandoval and Melecio Sandoval Jr., and her in-laws Helen Apodaca and Richard Atencio.

A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at 7 p.m. at the Romero Funeral Chapel in Alamosa. Another Vigil Service will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Friday, October 25, 2019 at 10 a.m. also at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Inurnment will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Alamosa Cemetery.
