Man arrested in alleged Moffat murder

MOFFAT­– Kenneth Mendenhall, Jr., 31, has been arrested for the alleged murder of Tracy Freel, 57, at a residence in Moffat, according to the Saguache County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials were called to the residence about 7:25 p.m. Tuesday and found Freel with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper right thigh. First aid was administered and Freel was transported to a helicopter landing zone in Villa Grove. While at the helicopter landing zone Freel unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

Mendenhall reportedly fled northbound towards Salida in a black Chevy Tahoe. He was detained around 9 p.m. by Chaffee County and Salida Police Department officers and taken into custody by a Saguache County deputy.

Mendenhall is currently being held in the Saguache County Jail on charges of First degree murder, First degree Assault, Second degree assault, Reckless endangerment, Prohibited use of a weapon, and Child Abuse.
