Lois Higgins Gilbert passed away June 15 at her home in Canon City.

She was born March 13, 1929 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Her family moved to Houston where she attended junior high and then graduated from Lamar High School. In 1947, she married Binford Gilbert, and they were married 60 years. In 1991, they moved to Canon City, where they retired.

As a preschool teacher, Lois worked for Head Start and several churches in Denver and Pampa, Texas. She was active in P.E.O. and had served as an officer.  She was also involved with church activities wherever she lived. She was a member of several bridge clubs over the years and always had a jigsaw puzzle on the table for anyone to help her with. 

For many years, Lois swam daily. She was also a huge Broncos and Rockies fan.

She is survived by three children and their spouses, Becky (Will), Bonnie (Jim Gibson), and Bruce (Katie); seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Elizabeth Sue.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 24, at Christ Episcopal Church, 802 Harrison Ave., Canon City.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels of Canon City, 702 Greenwood Ave., Canon City 81212; or P.E.O. Chapter DK Education Fund, care of Holt Funeral Home, 806 Macon Ave., Canon City 81212.
