Letter to the editor: Thanks for supporting Sgt. Glen Martinez Memorial 5k Run/Walk and Veterans Golf Tournament

We the Martinez family would like to thank all of you runners, walkers, and golfers who participated in the Sgt. Glen Martinez Memorial Scholarship 5K Run/Walk and Veterans Golf Tournament on May 26.  We want to include the people who so graciously donated their time to volunteer their services to make these two events possible to run so smoothly Becky & Joel Tonso, Pat & Cathy Sullivan, Pete & Annette Gonzales, Jeri Gonzales, Eli & Angelica Heredia and Brian Lujan  for registration, Angie DeSautell for directing participants into registration room and Daryl Elder for hanging signs and balloons to finish line. 

To Lori Martinez for her beautiful singing of the National Anthem.

We would like to thank Spencer Wingert & April Miller for taking care of the water station and making sure everyone remained hydrated. Thank you to Ron & Pat Rinebarger for the use of their side by side and the delicious pulled pork. 

We would like to thank Mark Jones for the use of the Monte Vista Golf Course and Pro Shop, all his hard work and time put in to make the golf course perfect and also the rest of his staff , Ingrid Watson &  Savannah Torres for registering all the golf teams and also for the most delicious lunch after the finish of the golf tournament.

We would like to also thank  Mike  Sanchez for making the most delicious  green chili and Jeff & Jessica Simmons for the scrumptious burritos, to Dorothy Chambers and Peggy Haley for serving breakfast and making sure all of the participants were taken care of.

Thank you to KSLV radio station for the broadcasting and PSA’s of Glen’s events, to the Monte Vista Journal and the Alamosa Courier for all the great advertising. 

Thank  you to Jed Ellithorpe Aspen Produce for the donation of potatoes and Top Value for their donation of meat, both for the lunch after the golf tournament, the Monte Vista and Alamosa Safeway stores, City Market, Wal-Mart, Walgreen store and Morgan & Becky Thompson  for their donations  of fruit and beverages.

The result of these two events benefits a senior boy & girl with a $1,000 financial boost with the beginning of their higher education. The recipients this year were Kaitlynn Porter & Jacob Chavez.

Glen made the Ultimate Sacrifice on May 02, 2008 while serving in the United States Marine Corps, Operation Iraqi Freedom. We know Glen would be very proud to know all the support and participation he received from our communities in the valley and from friends and families from Florida, South Dakota, Kansas and various parts of Colorado who unselfishly honor him on Memorial Weekend. We hope that you all enjoyed yourselves, got to visit with long- time friends & relatives and got some good exercise. The Martinez family hopes  to see you all next year!! May God Bless You All!
